Disaster Tips for NC Consumers
Friday, August 26, 2011
Hurricane Irene is heading for our coast and expected to make landfall tomorrow. Here are some tips to help you weather the storm:
- North Carolina’s law against price gouging is currently in effect due to Hurricane Irene. If you spot someone trying to make an unfair buck off of this disaster, report it to us by filing a price gouging complaint online or calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM.
- Watch out for home repair fraudsters who are likely to show up after the storm. Don’t pay for repairs upfront, and seek out reputable contractors instead of doing business with someone who knocks on your door.
- Watch out for scammers who may use the storm to try to solicit donations for phony charities. If you want to give, give to an organization you know and have researched rather than to someone who calls asking for money.
- The threat of hurricanes to our coast can interrupt vacation plans. Learn what your rights are as a consumer if this happens to you.
