Attorney General Josh Stein Urges Leaders in Congress to Repeal Law that Hampers DEA Enforcement

Release date:
11/14/2017

(RALEIGH) Attorney General Josh Stein today called on Congress to repeal legislation that shields drug distributors from enforcement actions. Recently highlighted on 60 Minutes and in the Washington Post, this law strips the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) of its ability to issue an immediate suspension order against a drug distributor whose unlawful conduct poses an imminent danger to public health.

“The opioid epidemic is far too serious to leave any enforcement option on the table,” said Attorney General Stein. “When drug distributors fail to do their duty to detect fraud and block illegal shipments, the DEA must be able to hold them accountable.”

Attorney General Stein was a lead author of the letter sent to Congressional leadership. He was joined by 43 of his colleagues.
