Attorney General Josh Stein Speaks Out on Behalf of Dreamers

Release date:
7/21/2017

(RALEIGH) Attorney General Josh Stein today urged President Trump to maintain and defend the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

“All across North Carolina, DACA is helping children meet their potential,” said Attorney General Stein. “When children meet their potential, we all benefit through innovation, economic activity, and stronger communities. Protecting these children now will have significant benefits in the future.”

Since DACA’s inception five years ago, nearly 800,000 young immigrants who were brought to this country as children have been granted DACA status after paying application fees, submitting to and passing background checks and applying for work permits. With nearly 50,000 Dreamers in North Carolina, the state has the 7th most in the nation.

Attorney General Stein is joined by attorneys general from: California Connecticut, Delaware, Hawai’i, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, Washington and Washington, D.C. in signing the letter.
