Attorney General Josh Stein is committed to protecting North Carolinians’ health care. Our office works to defend health care laws in court, fight for North Carolinians to have access to safe, affordable care, and investigates and prosecutes against Medicaid fraud.

Affordable Care Act

The ACA is vital for millions of North Carolinians’ health care. That’s why Attorney General Stein is fighting in the U.S Supreme Court to defend the law against attempts to dismantle it.

Between 2010 and 2015, more than 500,000 North Carolinians gained health insurance coverage through the ACA. Nearly 5 million North Carolinians benefit from protections against discrimination due to pre-existing conditions, and about 1.8 million seniors in North Carolina save more than $1,000 a year on drug prices as a result of the ACA.

For many North Carolinians, access to affordable health insurance under the ACA is critical. Our office will continue to fight to protect affordable and accessible health care for the people in our state.

COVID-19

In a crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic, our first focus should be on keeping people healthy. Attorney General Stein has worked to protect and expand people’s access to safe, affordable health care.

Attorney General Stein led a coalition of 22 states urging the federal government to make it possible for Americans across the country to enroll in health care coverage on HealthCare.Gov. He urged the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to suspend deadlines and collection activity during the pandemic. Our office urged Congress to increase internet connectivity so North Carolinians can access telehealth resources online.

Women’s Health Care

Every woman in North Carolina should have full access and autonomy over their health care decisions. Attorney General Stein has gone to court to push back against Trump administration attempts to disrupt women’s health care.

Attorney General Stein fought in court to protect women’s access to contraceptives under the ACA, urged Congress to reauthorize the violence against women act, and worked to protect women’s health care services.

Medicaid Fraud

Medicaid fraud pushes up the program’s costs and wastes taxpayer money. Attorney General Stein and our office’s Medicaid Investigations Division (MID) have recovered more than $850 million in restitution and penalties for North Carolina.

Our office will continue to identify, investigate, and prosecute these cases of Medicaid fraud that leave some of North Carolina’s most vulnerable citizens without access to needed care.

Mission Health

When for-profit HCA bought the non-profit Mission Health system, Attorney General Stein fought to ensure that the transaction would not hurt the quality of health care in western North Carolina. Attorney General Stein negotiated an agreement with HCA to commit to protecting people’s health care, and our office continues to hold them accountable to it.
