Attorney General Josh Stein Releases Statement on Voting Records Subpoena

Release date: 2/6/2019

(RALEIGH) Attorney General Josh Stein today released the following statement about the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina’s grand jury subpoenas to the North Carolina’s county boards of elections and the State Board of Elections & Ethics Enforcement that requested documents from nearly 7 million voters.

Attorney General Josh Stein:

“The sanctity of our elections is essential. It is critical that North Carolinians know that their votes matter. I support law enforcement’s efforts to combat election fraud, but the recent federal subpoenas affecting millions of North Carolinians’ voting records were overbroad and highly burdensome to the state agencies.

“I will continue to fight for the integrity of our elections. I will also fight to protect the privacy of law abiding North Carolinians from overreaches by the federal government.

“Today, the State Board of Elections has notified the county boards that they should produce approximately 790 voter files. I look forward to this issue being resolved soon so that state and federal officials can focus on investigating the alleged election fraud in the 9th congressional district.”
