AG Stein Opposes Elimination of Legal Services Funding

Release date:
5/25/2017

(RALEIGH) Attorney General Stein this week joined a bipartisan group of 32 attorneys general in urging Congress to oppose the Trump Administration’s proposal to eliminate all federal funding for the Legal Services Corporation (LSC). The letter highlights LSC’s mission to ensure equality in justice by providing legal support to those who could not otherwise afford it.

“These resources provide critical legal support for people in dire situations,” said AG Stein. “Everyone deserves access to quality representation and fair treatment in the justice system. I urge Congress to continue to fund this important program.”

LSC work assists rural and low-income communities; helps veterans and military families secure benefits; supports survivors of domestic violence seeking safety; aids families facing foreclosure; and helps victims of natural disasters.

LSC has operated with congressional funding for more than 40 years. LSC fosters public-private partnerships between legal aid organizations and private attorneys who donate their time and skills to assist low-income residents.

The letter was also signed by the attorneys general of Alaska, American Samoa, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Northern Mariana Islands, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.
