Attorney General Josh Stein Announces Ongoing Investigation into the Role of Prescription Painkiller Manufacturers in the Opioid Crisis

Release date:
6/15/2017

(RALEIGH) Attorney General Josh Stein is working with a bipartisan coalition of a majority of the state Attorneys General across the country in an ongoing investigation to evaluate whether manufacturers have engaged in unlawful practices in the marketing and sale of opioids. “Confronting the opioid crisis is one of my top priorities,” said Attorney General Stein. “Since I took office in January, I have been working to raise awareness, learn about and share community efforts, and promote legislative action to confront the crisis – including the STOP Act, which passed the Senate Health Care Committee today. A comprehensive approach to addressing this crisis must include a review of what role opioid manufacturers may have played in creating or prolonging this crisis.”

The coalition of Attorneys General is using its investigative tools, including subpoenas for documents and testimony, to determine the appropriate course of action to address this opioid epidemic.  Nationwide and in North Carolina, opioids—prescription and illicit—are the main driver of drug overdose deaths.

Though the coalition of Attorneys General is not identifying any targets of its investigation at this time, Attorney General Stein wants to assure the residents of North Carolina that he is actively taking steps to help address this opioid epidemic.
