Release date: 4/15/2019

(RALEIGH) Attorney General Josh Stein today submitted comments alongside the Department of Environmental Quality to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency opposing the Trump administration’s changes to the Waters of the United States (WOTUS) rule. A copy of those comments can be viewed here.

Attorney General Stein also released the following statement:

“North Carolinians should be able to trust that the water they drink is clean. But this Trump administration rule lowers protections on the wetlands and streams that provide clean water. Federal protections would be at their lowest levels since the early 1980s. It also creates confusion for farmers and developers.

“This rule would damage the clean water sources that are critical to people’s health and quality of life. It would also harm our coastal economy by endangering our marine environment and increasing the risk of flooding in areas where North Carolinians have already been devastated by recent hurricanes and floods.

“We cannot put the integrity of our water at risk. That’s why I, along with DEQ, will continue to fight to protect North Carolinians’ access to clean water.”
