Toxicology

Scientists in Toxicology perform the analysis of evidence from criminal investigations, such as homicides, driving under the influence, driving while impaired, and drug facilitated sexual assaults. Instrumental techniques such as gas chromatography-flame ionization, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry are used to examine blood and urine samples for impairing substances. Impairing substances include alcohol, inhalants, and drugs both prescription and illicit.
