Attorneys with the N.C. Department of Justice provide legal representation and advice to all state government departments, agencies and commissions.

The Attorney General also provides legal opinions at the request of other public officials and handles all criminal appeals from state trial courts. The Special Prosecutions lawyers take over cases when local prosecutors request help.

When public interests are at stake, the Attorney General can take legal action on behalf of the State and its citizens. The office cannot, however, represent individuals in their private legal disputes.

The Legal Services Division is overseen by Civil Bureau Chief Reuben Young.

Public officials can request opinions by contacting the NC Department of Justice in writing at 9001 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-9001.
