Session Description:  Disability Rights North Carolina (DRNC) is the only organization dedicated to advancing and defending the rights of people with all types of disabilities, of all ages, statewide. Attorney Tadra Martin will share how DRNC contributes to our state’s social safety net using a wide array of legal and other strategies, from information and referral to systemic litigation. DRNC’s areas of practice include education, housing, health, and mental health care, community access and supports, voting rights, and monitoring and investigating abuse and neglect in facilities, such as psychiatric hospitals, developmental centers, schools, and prisons and jails. A member of the DRNC criminal justice team will provide an update on issues the agency is involved in concerning NC’s jails and prisons.

Tadra Martin is a Supervising Attorney with Disability Rights North Carolina (DRNC). She joined DRNC in 2015 and leads the intake team. At DRNC, Tadra’s work focuses on ensuring high-quality information and referral services and timely responses to service requests. Although originally from South Carolina, Martin is a proud Tar Heel. Tadra received her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hilland her law degree from Vanderbilt Law School. For over five years, she represented low-income individuals in various areas of civil law as a staff attorney at Legal Aid of North Carolina. Prior to joining DRNC, Tadra conducted unemployment appeals hearings as a legal specialist at the NC Division of Employment Security.
