NCJA Leadership Institute
The NCJA Leadership Institute (NCJA-LI) Certificate is a cohort program scheduled only at specific times during the fiscal year (see catalog for exact dates). Students accepted into the program attend required classes and graduate together at the end of each structured session. NCJA-LI is an intensive study for law enforcement leaders intended to equip them to steer their agencies and communities toward the future. Developed from the leadership foundations formerly offered through the academy’s Management Development Program (MDP), NCJA-LI seeks to expand leadership education with a renewed focus on trends and topics that have the greatest impact on today’s law enforcement organizations. It is structured to deliver training in a format that maximizes course content while minimizing the student’s required time away from home and work.
To qualify for selection to NCJA-LI, students must complete the following prerequisites:
- Completion of NCJA Leadership Module 1 or Certified Credible Leadership (12-week online program through Wake Tech Community College).
- Completion of application to the program.
- Letter of endorsement from the applicant’s chief, sheriff, or director
- 1500-word essay based on reading material referenced in the online course
Once you complete all prerequisites, register for the Leadership Institute course through the student portal. You are required to upload all prerequisites documents at that time. All documents are reviewed and considered during the selection process, and we will notify the selected students a minimum of two weeks before the start of the class.
Selected participants to NCJA-LI must commit to attending all class sessions consisting of three 40-hour class periods held over a period of consecutive months (one-week per month). Two weeks are held on the campus of NCJA (check the catalog to confirm whether the session is in Salemburg or Edneyville) and the other at the UNC School of Government in Chapel Hill. More information regarding course content, rules, and expectations for the Leadership Institute is located under in the student portal.
