Traffic Enforcement & Investigation Certificate
Officers, upon completion of the program, will have mastered several important aspects of traffic enforcement and related topics, thus achieving a high level of professionalism for themselves as well as their department.
Participant Requirements
Must be a sworn member of a law enforcement agency and have at least two years of full-time law enforcement experience.
Must complete an application which will include their agency head’s approval to participate in the program as well as a letter of recommendation from their supervisor. The letter shall include verification that the officer has traffic enforcement and/or traffic investigation responsibilities.
Program Requirements
400 hours (must include the core classes with the balance of hours coming from the electives). Additional classes can be added to the list and, if this occurs, a notification will be sent to the program participants.
All courses must be taken within ten years of the completion of the program. Final approval of credited courses and credit hours is at the discretion of the program coordinator.
Credit for classes must be given through the North Carolina Justice Academy, except for some state and nationally recognized courses such as:
- Radar Operator
- Time-Distance Operator
- Intoximeter, Model Intox EC/IR II
Although credit for classes outside of NCJA will be considered, no more than 30% of total credit hours may be awarded.
Program Core Class Requirements
- Introduction to Traffic Crash Investigation – 40 hrs
- At-Scene Traffic Crash Investigation – 40 hrs
- Criminal Investigation Thru Traffic Law Enforcement – 24 hrs
- Intoximeter, Model Intox EC/IR II – 40 hrs
- RADAR Operator – 32 hrs
- Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) – 32 hrs
