Traffic Crash Investigation & Reconstruction Certificate Program
Participant Requirements
Must be a sworn member of a law enforcement agency and have at least two years of full-time law enforcement experience.
Program Requirements
A total of 400 hours, including the core classes, are required to complete the certificate. All courses must be taken within ten years of the completion of the program. Final approval of credited courses and credit hours is at the discretion of the program coordinator.
Core Class Requirements
- At-Scene Traffic Crash Investigation – 80 hrs
- Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation – 80 hrs
- Traffic Crash Reconstruction – 80 hrs
- Motorcycle Collision Investigation – 32 hrs
- Pedestrian/Bicycle Collision Investigation – 24 hrs
NOTE: Core courses must have been taken through the NC Justice Academy.
NOTE: The stand-alone NCJA Introduction to Traffic Crash Investigation (40 hours) and At-Scene Traffic Crash Investigation (40 hours) will be accepted in place of the merged At-Scene Traffic Crash Investigation (80 hours) course.
Elective Courses
Although credit for classes completed outside the NC Justice Academy will be considered, no more than 30% of total credit hours will be awarded; however, certain national and state-level courses will be credited at 100%. Elective courses must be from a traffic enforcement/investigation-related discipline.
To receive credit for courses delivered outside the NC Justice Academy, which are generally not tracked in Acadis, applicants must upload scanned copies of course completion certificates.
