An employee in this class may conduct preliminary and supplementary investigations related to major crimes, economic, special victim, cold case, property, domestic violence, narcotics, and juvenile offenses within the Sheriff’s Department. Employees interview victims, complainants, witnesses, and suspects, as well as identify, collect, analyze, and preserve physical evidence, prepare reports, develop sources, and testify in court. Work may involve general criminal investigation or highly specialized types of investigations, such as those relating to vice, fraud, sex, domestic violence, and narcotic offenses; crimes against, by, and/or pertaining to youths; or specialized evidence identification work This work is performed under minimum supervision and requires the application of modern investigative techniques, sound judgment, and independent initiative in pursuit of work objectives and carrying an independent caseload. Work involves frequent public contact which requires tact, firmness, and decisiveness. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policy and state and federal law, supplemented with specific directions from superior officers. The employees are subject to hazards associated with law enforcement including working in both inside and outside environments, in extremely cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as exposure to atmospheric conditions, noise, vibration, and physical conditions. Employees are subject to Level III OSHA Standards on bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed under the regular supervision and is evaluated through observation, review of reports, and discussion of case management.
