Social Networking Specialist and Content Editor

Proactively develop and facilitate releases to the media regarding criminal offenses, investigations, community events, and/or other areas of public interest; create and monitor content for standard social media platforms (example: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Snapchat, etc.); implement public information strategies to project a positive image of the County and the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office; promote the Sheriff’s Office through the identification/provision of information on stories of interest to the media, and periodic public service messages; research and write articles of  public interest; write speeches and feature stories; prepare briefings of major, unusual, or interesting items for administration staff; develop strategies for getting the Sheriff’s Office’s message on crime/crime prevention/other activities to the general public; produce video and slide productions; and plan and compose brochures, flyers, bulletins, television scripts, and various periodic and special purpose reports. This position will also be responsible for answering written and telephone inquiries regarding Sheriff’s Office activities; developing and maintaining a rapport with news media representatives; serving as an informational resource for management, the press, and the general public; maintaining and updating basic webpage and mobile app, and performing related duties as required.



Employees in this class perform a wide variety of administrative support, community communications, and office duties. Work generally requires that employees independently handle certain activities such as information processing, fiscal controls, computer systems administration, or a unique aspect of a program of office activity. Employees in this position independently handle communications through social media platforms and with local media outlets. Most assigned duties in this position require considerable tact and discretion in handling sensitive or confidential matters. Work requires a broader knowledge of more specialized office operations and communication via various social media platforms. Work requires more independence and self-initiative in activities and may include more independence in written and oral communications, functioning as the lead worker, or providing assistance to other administrative support positions.





Works closely with the command staff on communication strategies; serves as a liaison for the news media and general public; responds to requests regarding information from citizens, media, etc. designs, writes, and edits a variety of printed material, including brochures, flyers, newsletters, press releases, reports, program policies, and other items of public interest; prepares written correspondence for management regarding major or unusual situations.


Plans, creates, publishes, and shares content (including original text, images, video, and code) to build meaningful connections, increase public awareness, and encourage community engagement; performs a variety of administrative support, community communications, records processing in an office; and works independently performing duties requiring the ability to interpret and apply rules and regulations to various situations; and stays up-to-date with current technologies and trends in social media, design tools, and applications


Operates a computer and related data files in generating professional correspondence, statistics, minutes, reports, press releases, reviews work for compliance, spelling, punctuation, and grammar; proofreads final copies. Secures information via telephone or personal contact; selects appropriate materials to answer questions, and often handles the inquiries independently.


Performs related duties as required and serves as a backup for positions in the Sheriff’s Office.



Knowledge of advertising and publicity techniques and practices; printing techniques and style guidelines for writing press releases and publications; techniques of publication preparation and design of brochures, displays, and visual aids; mobile applications and related technology; standard social media platforms; project management and research methods/techniques; social media analytics, and principles and practices of composing and editing informational material; considerable knowledge working with data, statistics, figures, and communications platforms; video editing and publication. Ability to maintain effective relationships with supervisors, employees, and the public; and may need the ability to plan, organize, monitor, evaluate, and delegate duties to others. Must be able to communicate with the general public and news media representatives effectively. Must have excellent writing skills.



Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or closely related field. Considerable experience involving responsible public relations or journalism work. Experience with electronic media (example: internet, radio, and/or television). Because of the confidential, sensitive nature of the information handled, successful completion of a background investigation is required.


Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.


Starting salary is negotiable based on experience.



Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions.


Must be able to perform work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and 20 pounds of force frequently.


Must possess the visual acuity to perform extensive reading and perform administrative, computer and measurement work.
