Brief Summary of Work for this Position:
The Police Officer performs law enforcement work at a university campus with full powers of arrest, enforcing the laws of the State and the United States Government. The position has law enforcement authority ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a limited geographic jurisdiction. Work involves patrolling an assigned area for the response to complaints or calls and for detection of violations in the enforcement of State laws and applicable regulations.

Duties include apprehending observed violators committing offenses, investigating violations or complaints in order to assess and handle cases, collection, and preservation of evidence and the chain of custody, testifying in court proceedings and performing related work.

N.C. Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
High school diploma or equivalency. Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.

Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position:
Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills

Must demonstrate an appreciation for and the ability to implement a modern community policing initiative and law enforcement functions within an urban university setting

Must demonstrate the ability to recognize issues and dangerous situations and respond in an appropriate manner

Must demonstrate the ability to understand and operate within applicable laws, policies, and procedures

Must demonstrate the ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse populations including students, parents, faculty, staff and the general public

Knowledge and understanding of current criminal and civil law procedures

Officer must have the ability to carry out the responsibilities of the position

Must demonstrate knowledge and abilities to work with Microsoft Office Suite (or comparable programs)

Preferred education, professional skills, and experience:
Preferred skills include the ability to utilize good interpersonal skills to effectively and fairly enforce the laws of government to the degree in which the laws were designed to accomplish

Certifications or licensure required to perform the essential functions of the position:
Certification is required and administered through the NC Administrative Code in 12 NCAC 9A Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission

Recruitment Range: $41,000 – $43,834

NC Salary Grade Equivalency: 65

Hours Per Week: 1.0 (40 hours per week)

Months Per Year: 12 Months

Work Days: Rotating Schedule; includes nights, weekends, and holidays
