(RALEIGH) Attorney General Josh Stein today announced new hires as he continues to fill recent vacancies to build his staff. Biographical information about each person is below.
“It is energizing to continue to build out my team and bring public-spirited, smart people on board,” said AG Stein. “These latest hires are talented, energetic and will do great service for the people of North Carolina.”
Jasmine McGhee, Director, Public Protection Section and Special Deputy Attorney General,
previously worked at K&L Gates where she was counsel, and managed the government investigations practice of the Raleigh office. Her practice focused on white collar criminal/regulatory investigations and civil litigation. Previously, Jasmine was counsel in the litigation department of WilmerHale in Washington, D.C., and a law clerk to Judge Andre M. Davis, then of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. Jasmine earned her undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her law degree from Columbia Law School.
The Public Protection Section, formerly titled the Victims and Citizens Services Section, is focused on promoting public safety, preventing crime and protecting the rights of victims. Jasmine’s extensive pro bono practice, which has included representing human trafficking victims and clients in family court and civil rights matters, in addition to her broad government and regulatory-related practice, make her well-suited for this role.
Kristen Bierline, Human Resources Director,
has worked in human resources and benefits at the North Carolina Department of State Treasurer since 2003, including serving as the director of human resources since 2014. Kristen also worked in human resources at Interpath Communications and at MCIWORLDCOM. She has a bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University.
The North Carolina Department of Justice employs more than 800 people in several locations, including at the State Crime Laboratory and the North Carolina Justice Academy. Kristen will oversee the human resources department that handles employment, payroll, benefits and retirement services for these employees.
Stewart Johnson, Senior Deputy Attorney General, Civil Division,
has worked at the North Carolina Department of Insurance since 2003, including serving as the department’s general counsel since 2004. Prior to that, he worked as an assistant attorney general in both the labor and insurance sections of the North Carolina Department of Justice, as an assistant district attorney and served three years as a judge advocate in the U.S. Army. Stewart earned his undergraduate degree at Wake Forest University and his law degree at the UNC School of Law.
The Civil Division handles civil claims and litigation involving the state, its officials and employees. Sections include insurance, labor, motor vehicles, property control, revenue and transportation.
Steve Mange, Senior Policy & Strategy Counsel,
has worked most recently as director of government affairs for the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association. He earlier served as senior policy advisor to Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, where he was a key advisor on drug policy issues. He also worked as the principal consultant to the national Alliance for Model State Drug Laws on the National Prescription Drug Project, and served as the executive director of the Illinois Meth Project, a year-long meth prevention campaign.
In his role with AG Josh Stein, Steve will focus initially on strategies to address the opioid epidemic, which is one of the Attorney General’s top priorities.
