Legal Internships

If you are interested in a legal career or law enforcement, the Department of Justice and State Crime Lab offer a variety of internship opportunities for students.

Legal Internships

Each year, the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office selects law students to serve as legal interns. As a legal intern, your work assignments would include assignments such as drafting appellate briefs, attending hearings and depositions, and organizing and drafting discovery responses.

Legal interns have the opportunity to interact with judges and lawyers, and attend a series of outside events, including a visit to the State Crime Lab.

Although these internship programs are unpaid, the department strongly encourages you to seek academic credit or financial assistance through grant programs.

For more information on the legal internship program, contact legalinterns@ncdoj.gov

Available Internships with the Attorney General’s Office

The North Carolina Department of Justice Attorney General’s Office handles issues that affect every aspect of state government and the lives of North Carolina residents. One of the goals of the office is to recruit the best and brightest students to the rewards of serving the people of North Carolina. An effective way to introduce students to public service is through our summer internship program.

Serving as a legal summer intern gives students an opportunity to work alongside some of the state’s very best attorneys to see first-hand the challenges our lawyers face. In addition to assisting the state’s attorneys, interns will also participate in a variety of activities to give them a perspective on our department’s work, such as attending oral arguments in the appellate courts, touring Central Prison and visiting the State Crime Laboratory.  Please find the below application instructions and materials.  In addition to summer internships, some sections will be accepting applications for spring and fall internships.  This information will be located under the “Available Internships” section under the section descriptions.

We have recently added paralegal internships to our program.  Those sections participating in these internships will be noted on the Section Descriptions document.
