Protecting the Next Generation of North Carolinians

Attorney General Josh Stein and the NC Department of Justice are working hard to keep kids safe, including by leading the fight against the teen vaping epidemic, investigating TikTok and Facebook for possible harm to kids’ mental health, and protecting kids from child sex abuse with the SAFE Child Act of 2019.

In keeping with this commitment, Attorney General Stein looks forward to joining with leaders across our state on May 8 to discuss the challenges facing our youth and strategies to help keep them safe. The convening – Protecting the Next Generation of North Carolinians – will highlight the varied and evolving threats confronting our youth, focusing on youth safety and well-being online, including the mental health impacts of social media, and youth substance use.

In addition to Attorney General Stein, speakers include:

  • Dr. Charlene Wong, Assistant Secretary for Children and Families for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
  • Robin Koval, CEO & President of Truth Initiative
  • Spencer Merriweather, Mecklenburg County District Attorney
  • Donnie Mitchem, Director Atrium Health Behavioral Health Services
  • Ryan Etheridge, Cleveland County Schools
  • Kelly Little, Clinical Supervisor, Dilworth Center
  • Maceo Mayo III, RHA Health Services Prevention Coordinator, member of Gaston Controlled Substances Coalition
  • Parent advocates Baker Burleson and Debbie Dalton, who will share their children’s stories. Baker Burleson’s son William has written about his bipolar disorder, and his experiences with pain, hospitalization, and growth. Debbie Dalton lost her son Hunter to a fentanyl overdose in 2016 and has created a foundation in his honor.
