Furniture

North Carolina has long been known for fine furniture, but there are a few dealers whose shady business practices give North Carolina furniture a bad name.

Before you order furniture:

  • Check out the company. Research the retailer before you order by checking with the Better Business Bureau and the Attorney General’s office in the state where the company is located. You can call NC Attorney General Josh Stein’s office at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM toll free within NC or at (919) 716-6000.
  • Get the details in writing. Ask for the retailer’s return or cancellation policy and warranty, a delivery date, and the total price, including shipping fees, in writing. Review all of this information carefully before you buy.
  • Keep track of the delivery date. If you order by phone, mail or Internet, request an estimated delivery date. If the furniture does not arrive by that date, the Federal Mail Order Rule may give you the right to cancel the order for a full refund if you want. This only applies to orders placed with a non-local business over the phone, via fax, Internet or through the mail.
  • Measure carefully. Remember to measure the spot where a new piece of furniture will go as well as the path to that location. Most retailers will not give you your money back if your furniture doesn’t fit.
  • Pay by credit card. To improve your odds of getting a refund if something goes wrong with your order or if the company goes out of business, pay by credit card.
  • Don’t accept damaged furniture. If an item is damaged or defective when it arrives, do not accept delivery or sign off on payment for it. Once the furniture is in your house, the retailer might agree to repair it, but is not required to replace it or give you a refund.
  • Complain if you aren’t satisfied. If you find defects after you’ve already accepted delivery, send your complaint to the retailer in writing along with copies of contracts, order forms, receipts and a photograph of the damage.
