Grants fund projects to improve and protect North Carolina’s natural resources
(RALEIGH) Attorney General Josh Stein today encouraged North Carolinians working to improve and protect North Carolina’s natural resources to apply for project grants through the Environmental Enhancement Grant (EEG) program. The EEG program awards grants between $5,000 and $500,000 for environmental projects across the state and is accepting proposals until Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2019.
“From the mountains to the coast, North Carolina’s natural beauty is breathtaking,” said Attorney General Josh Stein. “I’m committed to protecting our state’s natural resources, and I encourage North Carolinians who are also working to protect the environment to apply for these grants.”
The EEG program provides grants to nonprofit organizations, including academic institutions and government entities. Grants are awarded for environmental projects such as obtaining conservation easements, constructing or maintaining wetlands, restoring and protecting surface waters, and conserving and protecting natural areas. Grants must be completed within three years after they are awarded. In past grant cycles, grantees have used the funds to acquire land for preservation, protect eroding streams, and find solutions to prevent stormwater from causing groundwater contamination, flooding, and erosion.
The EEG program was established in 2000 through a 25-year agreement between the Attorney General’s Office and Smithfield Foods that included a $2 million annual provision for environmental projects in North Carolina. The program has awarded more than $25 million in environmental grants since 2002.
