Security freezes and active duty alerts are two of the weapons that can be deployed in this fight, but utilizing both at the same time could lead to unnecessarily complications.

Active Duty Alert
- Duration: 1 year at a time
- To Put In Place: Contact 1 credit bureau
- Cost: Free
- To Establish a New line of Credit Once Your Alert or Freeze is in Place: Credit bureau should verify your identity.*
- Management: *You can designate a representative to act on your behalf.
Security Freeze
- Duration: Indefinite
- To Put In Place: Contact 3 credit bureaus
- Cost: Free for NC residents (online)
- To Establish a New line of Credit Once Your Alert or Freeze is in Place: You temporarily lift the freeze with the PIN or password you received when placing your freeze.
- Management: Freezes can be managed online.
