Attorney General Josh Stein Speaks Out Against Seismic Testing Off North Carolina’s Coast

Release date:
7/21/2017

(RALEIGH) Attorney General Josh Stein today voiced his opposition of seismic surveys off the coast of North Carolina. Five applicants have proposed conducting seismic activity in the Atlantic Ocean.

“North Carolina’s coast is among our most valuable resources,” said Attorney General Stein. “Fishing and tourism are vital to our economy. We must protect both commercial and recreational fishing, as well as our coastal views. There are far too many jobs tied to North Carolina’s coast to open up our shores to dangerous seismic activity.”

In 2015, 54.6 million travelers spent $21.9 billion dollars in North Carolina. That leads to more than 200,000 tourism jobs.

Attorney General Stein was joined by eight other attorneys general, including those from Connecticut, Delaware, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania and New York.
