Attorney General Stein’s June Column: North Carolinians invest their tax dollars in the Department of Justice; our new website shows return on that investment.

June 2024

Serving as your Attorney General is an honor that comes with a tremendous responsibility to you, the people of North Carolina. I take that responsibility seriously and am excited to show you all how hard we’ve been working for you at the Department of Justice (DOJ). My talented colleagues and I work daily to defend the state, its people, and their constitutional rights, and now you can see first-hand how that pays off in your community. This month, we’re launching the DOJ Delivers website, which ensures that all North Carolinians can see how the Department of Justice is delivering for you.

The DOJ Delivers mapping tool outlines our work in all 100 of North Carolina’s counties and includes the funds we’ve won on your behalf as well as our work to keep people safe, including testing sexual assault kits and certifying law enforcement officers. You can hover over or select North Carolina counties to receive a preview of financial and safety outcomes and can then click on a county for more detailed data that shows the impact our department’s work has had in your community.

Since 2017, DOJ has strengthened the state and its people by winning $1.4 billion in opioid settlements, $3 billion in money won for consumers, and $1.2 billion collected through diligent enforcement of the tobacco settlement – for a total of more than $5.6 billion. We have also ended the backlog of untested sexual assault kits, successfully gone after Medicaid fraud, certified and trained thousands of law enforcement officers, and prosecuted violent criminals.

We will continue to work hard and ensure that we are building a North Carolina where everyone can succeed. We’re excited for you to see this DOJ Delivers site (www.ncdoj.gov/dojdelivers) so you can see our work to make North Carolina safer and stronger.
