Instructor Certification
Any person participating in a Commission-certified criminal justice training course or program as an instructor, teacher, professor, lecturer or other participant making presentations to the class shall first be certified by the Commission as an instructor.To qualify for issuance of General Instructor Certification, an applicant shall demonstrate a combination of education and experience in criminal justice and proficiency in the instructional process to the satisfaction of the Commission.
The applicant shall meet the following requirements for General Instructor Certification:
- High school diploma or GED,
- Four years of practical experience as a criminal justice officer or as an administrator or specialist in a field directly related to the criminal justice system;
- Successful completion of a Commission-certified instructor training program; and
- Applications for General Instructor Certification must be submitted to the Standards Division within 60 days of the date the applicant successfully passed the state comprehensive examination administered at the conclusion of the instructor course.
NOTE: Failure to submit an application for General Instructor Certification within 60 days of completion of the course and exam will result in the applicant being required to complete a subsequent Commission-certified instructor training course in its entirety.

Requirements for Probationary Instructors
- For the first 12 months of certification, all instructors are in a probationary status.
- During the probationary year, the instructor must teach 8 hours in a Commission-approved course.
- The probationary instructor must submit an application to the Standards Division prior to the 12 month expiration date in order to be considered for General Instructor Certification.
Terms and Conditions of General Instructor Certification
- Each instructor certified by the Commission to teach in a Commission-accredited course shall remain competent in his/her specialized areas. Such competence includes remaining current in the instructor’s area of expertise, which shall be demonstrated by successfully completing all instructor updates issued by the Commission.
