The Public Protection Section (PPS) works to protect the public and prevent crime in North Carolina.
Our Work
Through policy and public protection education, we prioritize victims and survivors of violent crime, such as domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and stalking.
This includes:
- Coordinating with service providers and advocacy organizations
- Providing victim services, such as the Address Confidentiality Program, which helps victims keep their address safe from abusers
- Doing crime prevention work in the community
We focus on improving the criminal justice system with various stakeholders throughout the state, including the executive, legislative, and judicial branches.
We aim to prevent scams and frauds against our citizens, in particular our seniors, through public education and (where appropriate) litigation by the Consumer Protection Division.
Victims of consumer rip-offs and identity theft can get assistance from the Attorney General’s consumer specialists.
As scammers, fraudsters, and predators use the internet to target their victims, we also focus on educating the public about internet safety.
The Department of Justice’s Debt Bondage Repair Initiative certifies North Carolina organizations helping survivors of human trafficking seek a fresh start through credit repair.
We house the Department of Justice’s Open Government Unit. Contact us at opengov@ncdoj.gov or (919) 716-6938 for information on how to obtain public records and conduct open meetings.

Members of the Public Protection Section are available to speak to the public on any of the above topics or others. Request a speech or presentation from our office; contact us by mail at 9001 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-9001; email us at outreach@ncdoj.gov, or call us at (919) 716-6780.
We Can Help
Criminal defendants have the right to appeal decisions by judges and juries, and victims can learn where and when the appeals will be heard.
If you or a loved one is the victim of a crime, call Attorney General Stein’s Public Protection Section for help at (919) 716-6780, or email us at publicprotection@ncdoj.gov.
