(RALEIGH) Attorney General Josh Stein today filed a lawsuit to protect Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) grantees. The lawsuit, filed this afternoon in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, details the ways the Trump administration has violated the Equal Protection clause of the Constitution by discriminating against DREAMers of Mexican origin, violated Due Process rights; and harmed North Carolinian residents, institutions and economies.
“Ending DACA isn’t just cruel to Dreamers, against our American values, and the wrong thing to do for our nation’s economy, it also violates our Constitution,” said Attorney General Stein. “I will do everything in my power to restore DACA for the tens of thousands of young people in North Carolina who rely on it – including fighting for them in court.”
North Carolina is home to approximately 27,000 DACA grantees, and there are approximately 800,000 DACA recipients across the country. DACA grantees pay $63,618,000 annually in state and local taxes in North Carolina as the Institute of Taxation and Economic Policy has detailed.
Today’s lawsuit also includes a number of declarations from businesses, academic institutions, local governments, DACA grantees, and others impacted by the Trump administration’s decision.
Attorney General Stein was joined in this lawsuit by 15 other attorneys general, including those from Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.
