Employment Agencies

While job hunting, you may come across ads for companies that promise to help you get a job. Although some of these companies are legitimate, others may misrepresent their services, promote outdated or fake job offerings, or charge high fees for services that are unlikely to lead to a job.

To protect yourself from questionable employment agencies, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Be suspicious of any employment agency that guarantees it can get you a job.
  • Be skeptical of any employment agency that charges up-front fees and claims it guarantees refunds to all dissatisfied customers.
  • Be wary of unsolicited emails offering jobs with great pay and benefits. These are usually scams to steal your personal information.
  • Find out what services the firm offers, how much the services cost and who pays—you or the prospective employer.
  • If you’re required to pay a fee, find out what you’ll owe if the employment service doesn’t find you a job or fails to give you any valid leads.
  • Get a copy of the agency’s contract and review it carefully before you sign or pay any money.
  • If you’ve been promised something that doesn’t appear in the contract, ask for it in writing. If the firm won’t put all of its promises in writing, think twice about doing business them.
  • Make sure you understand the agency’s refund policy.
