Phone Blocks
Phone blocks can help protect you from unexpected charges on your phone bill. Here are some different types of phone blocks to consider.
- 900 Block prevents calls to 900 and 976 numbers from your telephone line. It’s free from your local telephone company. Even if you have never had a problem with calls to 900 numbers from your phone line, having a block can help prevent accidental calls or calls made by visitors.
- International Block prevents calls from your telephone line to numbers outside of North America. You may want to consider getting an international block if you don’t need to make calls to other countries. You can sign up for an international block with either your long distance company (free of charge) or your local company (for a one-time fee). An international block through a local phone company is more effective than through a long distance carrier, although neither is foolproof.
- Collect Block. While you may want to be able to accept collect calls from family members or friends, there are situations where it may be best to block incoming collect calls. Requesting a collect block will make it less likely that you’ll get stuck paying for collect calls you didn’t authorize. Some local phone companies make this block available to all consumers for a one-time fee, while others only offer it for free if you’ve had problems with collect calls.
- Special Features Block. Most local phone companies offer special features like call return, three-way calling, and busy-connect. You can pay a monthly fee for unlimited use of these features or pay a fee each time you use one of these services. If you don’t plan to use these features, you can ask your local phone company to block some or all of them for free.
