Helping Solve Crimes

Lab analysts examine evidence related to criminal investigations free of charge to any North Carolina public law enforcement agency, including local, state, federal, military, and railroad police organizations.

The laboratory provides:

  • Consultation on the value, use, collection, and preservation of evidence
  • Analysis of evidence
  • Expert testimony in court proceedings
  • Assistance collecting evidence and processing crime scenes

All three laboratories are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.  For emergency situations, services are available on a 24-hour basis.

Lab analysts are accessible to all verified attorneys who have questions about tests performed and for pre-trial conferences.

Internationally Accredited

On May 4, 1988, the Crime Laboratory became the seventeenth laboratory system in the nation to be accredited, the seventh state laboratory to become accredited, and the first in the southeastern part of the United States to be accredited by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB).

In 2009, Crime Laboratory management began to pursue ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accreditation for the next re-accreditation cycle which was scheduled for 2013.

The Laboratory was accredited under ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standards in 2013 by Forensic Quality Services (FQS) and in 2014 by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB).

These agencies later merged to become a part of the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) which currently accredits the Crime Laboratory under ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standards.
